Shaping the Next Generation: School Visits & Work Experience at Studio G

At Studio G, enriching communities and empowering people sit at the heart of how we work. For us, that isn’t just about the buildings we design, but also about supporting our local community and helping young people learn about careers in our industry.

For many people, understanding how to become an architect can be hard to figure out. Over the past few months, we’ve enjoyed spending time with local students through school visits, careers fairs, and work experience placements, sharing our career paths and giving them an insight into our industry.

Hands-On in the Studio: Work Experience Placements

Work experience at Studio G is designed to give students practical insight into real projects, industry software, and how design connects to construction on site.

Designing from Scratch: Oliver’s Self-Build

We welcomed Oliver from The King’s School in Grantham to spend a week in the studio with our Associate Emma Clarke.

With ambitions of becoming an architect, Oliver was set a task to design a 4-bedroom self-build project from scratch. Alongside his design work, Oliver visited The Old School Yard development with Jasmine Craft from Gusto Construction to see a live site in action. By Friday, Oliver presented his completed proposal to the entire team, where everyone was thoroughly impressed with his work.

Work Experience with Jack & Elsie

We also spent a week hosting Jack and Elsie across Gusto Group, Gusto Construction, and Studio G:

  • Jack spent time exploring different construction trades. Alongside reviewing site progress and contractor reports with the construction team, he spent time on site and discovered a clear interest in joinery.

  • Elsie spent time across HR, marketing, and architectural design. During her afternoon at Studio G, Elsie sketched out her dream house on the drawing board before working with Aaid to turn her drawing into 3D CGI, producing a full visual proposal complete with a rooftop bar and swimming pool!

Partnering with Newark Academy

Supporting students who are interested in architecture and construction is a great way to share how the industry works. We have also hosted two students from Newark Academy for a week-long placement, split across Gusto Group, Gusto Construction, and Studio G to give them a clear view of different roles.

Out in the Community: School Visits & Careers Fairs

Alongside hosting students in the office, our team has been out visiting local schools and events to talk about roles in architecture and construction.

Lincolnshire Construction & Engineering Week

Our team attended the Lincolnshire Showground for Lincolnshire Construction and Engineering Week; an event focused on showing primary and secondary pupils the career options available in construction and engineering.

We ran multiple short 30-minute workshops where students designed their ideal home on paper before building a model using recycled materials. The ideas were fantastic, ranging from slides instead of stairs to energy-saving features.

Careers Fair at St Giles Academy

At St Giles Academy in Lincoln, Heba and Jasmine joined the school’s careers fair to chat with pupils about jobs in the construction and design industry. Students got to try laying bricks and tested their quick-fire math skills on our spinning wheel, highlighting how maths is an important skill on a building site.
